Reading

At Taxal and Fernilee CE Primary School, we believe that reading is essential to children’s lives. It provides access to places, times and people they would otherwise never encounter. At Taxal and Fernilee CE Primary School we aim to ensure that reading is a part of every lesson. A good reader is able to able to access the full curriculum and reach their full potential. Our aim as a school is to foster a love of reading in children and inspire them to read a wide variety of different books by a range of authors that reflect the cultures and diversity of the world around us.

We now use the Little Wandle scheme of work to teach our EYFS and Year 1 children phonics. For more information, please see the parents section on the Little Wandle website here:

Writing

At Taxal and Fernilee CE Primary School, our writing is linked to our high quality texts in each class. In Reception, we teach children the skills of letter formation and sentence writing. This process is linked closely with the teaching of phonics. As the children progress through school, they are taught to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish their writing. The children create work in a range of genres and we believe that writing for both purpose and pleasure is important for them to become confident and capable writers.
