Design & Technology
At Taxal and Fernilee CE Primary School, the children receive a Design and Technology curriculum which encourages them to use their imagination, creativity and natural curiosity. We follow the ‘Design, Make, Evaluate’ approach to the teaching of DT, as outlined in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study document.
During DT sessions, children are encouraged to be inquisitive about the way products work. They both ask and answer questions in order to deepen their understanding of products and the design process. The children are expected to design products which solve real and relevant problems, whilst considering the quality and impact of their product.
Technical knowledge and skills are developed progressively as they move through school. The children are given opportunities to learn, apply and practice their skills throughout the making process. Knowledge of how to select appropriate tools and techniques, whilst following safe procedures are developed.
The evaluation process encourages children to reflect upon their own work. They seek and consider other people’s opinions and views in order to identify strengths and recognise improvements that can be made to their final product.
We believe that Design and Technology allows the children to become innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers and reflective learners.
